The Issues

making downtown a destination for those in our community and beyond

We have the beginnings of a downtown that could attract tourists from around the region. This would be a boon for us as a town. The council can support this by continuing to make downtown an attractive area through public art projects and urban forestry. Council could also coordinate more downtown events in partnership with downtown businesses.

creating opportunities for local businesses

Local businesses are essential for the ongoing prosperity of the town. While non-local business can provide beneficial jobs, they can also take wealth out of a community when compared to a local business. Council can encourage the development of local business by coordinating drives to buy local and highlighting local businesses.

effectively stewarding our tax dollars

While necessary, taxes can often feel burdensome. It is council’s job to ensure that these funds are used effectively. Decisions about expenditures need to also take into consideration the hidden costs of not acting or additional costs that may be incurred by the city later on.

ensuring public safety

Public safety is one of the chief responsibilities of government. Police and fire are a critical aspect of this. However, prevention by facilitating access to mental health resources and fostering community are also important. Prevention is often intangible but usually costs less than enforcement.

maintaining our parks

Parks are a necessary resource. Beautiful green spaces are important for recreation and mental health. Families considering moving to Longview see our parks first and they are one of our most attractive features.
